Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of nomadic identity and identity crisis in Kamila Shamsie’s novel Home Fire. The research explores how migration, cultural displacement, citizenship, religious identity, and political circumstances shape the identities of Pakistani Muslims living in the West. The study employs a qualitative research design and uses content analysis to examine the experiences of the major characters in the novel. The theoretical framework is primarily based on May Joseph’s concept of “Nomadic Identity” presented in Nomadic Identities: The Performance of Citizenship, with reference to Erik Erikson’s concept of identity crisis. The analysis demonstrates that the Pasha family experiences a continuous struggle to negotiate between Pakistani, Muslim, and British identities. Characters such as Isma, Aneeka, and Parvaiz experience different forms of displacement and identity conflict, particularly as their personal identities intersect with issues of migration, terrorism, citizenship, and Western perceptions of Muslims. The study further argues that Home Fire portrays citizenship as conditional and contested, particularly for Muslim immigrants whose loyalty is repeatedly questioned by the state. Karamat Lone’s political position and his treatment of the Pasha family further illustrate the tension between individual identity and state authority. The findings suggest that Shamsie presents nomadic identity as a complex and unstable condition in which migrants must continuously negotiate their rights, belonging, cultural affiliations, and citizenship. Ultimately, Home Fire highlights the consequences of fractured identities and strained relationships between individuals, families, and the state, demonstrating how political and social exclusion can intensify personal and cultural identity crises.
