Abstract

This research evaluated the effect of stigma and social support on parent psychological well-being for children with disabilities, with the mediating role of coping strategies. A correlational research design was used with (N=100) participants, and data were collected via standard instruments. Data from participants were analyzed using correlation, multiple regression, hierarchical regression analyses and mediation analyses. Results indicated that social support positively predicted psychological well-being, while stigma negatively predicted psychological well-being. The evidence for mediating effects of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies was weak. Results demonstrate how enhancing social support and reducing stigma can improve psychological well-being among parents of children who have disabilities.
