Abstract

This paper examines the malicious impacts of modern media on regional and global politics. Biased reporting, mis-information and sensationalism aggravate global tensions. It elaborates the role of media in increasing hostilities, polarization, deteriorating democratic institutions and shaping heinous agendas of different interest groups and world powers.

The study identifies the proliferation of disinformation of fake news and state sponsored propaganda which significantly undermine public interests and manipulate international and diplomatic relations. Social media which has emerged as a pivotal rival to mainstream media now acts as a catalyst agent for algorithmic polarization prioritizing emotionally charged and sensationalist contents to maximize mass engagement. Constant and widespread exposure to unverified news leads to “epistemic” insecurity and the citizens become doubtful of the capacity of any institution to provide valid truth and information.

The findings of the research suggest that the present prevailing trends of media narratives frequently performs as a catalyst for social, political and economic unrest and violent extremism. The study provides conclusions emphasizing intervention in media literacy and regulating oversight.
