Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on employee environmental performance. Moreover, do green innovative workplace behavior mediates this relationship. For this, a random sampling method was used to collect data from banking employees, that yielded 294 employees using a structured questionnaire survey, both online distribution and self-administered questioners. PLS-SEM was used to analyze the data. Results showed that Intrinsic Motivation (IM) did not have a significant direct effect on Employee Engagement Performance whereas Extrinsic Motivation and GIWB have a strong and significant direct positive influence on EEP. Surprisingly, the hypothesized mediation of GIWB between the EM and EEP relationship was not supported. Findings showed that structural constraints have a significant impact on the relationship between intrinsic motivation and performance, and that organizational incentives and compliance mechanisms directly link with performance from extrinsic motivation. The study highlights the importance of organizations' attempts to balance external incentives and internalization of values and autonomy to improve environmental performance.
