Urdu drama occupies a distinctive position in the history of South Asian literature because its development has been closely connected with the region’s cultural traditions, social transformations, theatrical practices, and changing intellectual trends. The history of Urdu drama cannot, therefore, be adequately understood through Western dramatic models alone. This study examines the historical evolution of Urdu drama by tracing its relationship with indigenous performance traditions, folk theatre, Sanskrit dramatic heritage, music, dance, poetry, and the imaginative world of classical South Asian culture. It also discusses the influence of Parsi theatre and Western dramatic practices on the structure, language, themes, characterization, and stage techniques of Urdu drama. Particular attention is given to the critical debates surrounding early Urdu drama, including questions of dramatic form, plot construction, characterization, supernatural elements, romantic themes, music, dance, dramatic conflict, and realism. The study further explores the changing nature of Urdu dramatic criticism, from moralistic responses to more systematic literary, historical, and theoretical approaches. The contributions of major researchers and critics in establishing the history of Urdu drama, editing its texts, examining its theatrical traditions, and questioning unsupported historical claims are also considered. Another important aspect of the study is the debate concerning the earliest Urdu drama and the problems involved in determining textual and historical priority. Different claims regarding works associated with Wajid Ali Shah, Amanat, Madari Lal, and other early dramatists are examined in the light of available historical and textual evidence. The study emphasizes the significance of textual criticism, authentic sources, manuscript verification, and documentary evidence in reconstructing the history of Urdu drama. The research concludes that Urdu drama has evolved through a complex interaction between indigenous traditions, Persian-Urdu literary culture, Parsi theatre, Western dramatic influences, social reform movements, realism, and modern theatrical theories. Its history should consequently be approached as a dynamic process rather than as a simple imitation of Western drama. A comprehensive understanding of Urdu drama requires simultaneous attention to its textual, historical, cultural, social, critical, and per formative dimensions. The study also identifies several areas that require further research, particularly stage history, manuscript traditions, regional theatre, performance practices, audience reception, and the preservation and critical editing of early dramatic texts.
