Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive biographical and historical study of Sayyiduna Abu Al-As ibn al-Rabi' (RA), examining his lineage, early life, and eventual transition into Islamic history. Known for his noble lineage and elite standing in Makkah, his life took a pivotal turn during the Battle of Badr. Fighting alongside the Quraysh, his subsequent captivity and unique ransom—secured by his wife, Sayyidatuna Zainab (RA), through the necklace of Sayyidatuna Khadijah (RA)—highlighted his deep integrity. Following his release, Abu Al-As profoundly praised the Ansar for their honorable treatment of prisoners and lauded his wife for her unmatched loyalty.
Despite returning to Makkah as a non-Muslim to fulfill his financial obligations, his adherence to trustworthiness culminated in his eventual migration and conversion to Islam. The study explores his virtues, including the high esteem the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ held for him as an exemplary son-in-law. It details his family life, particularly his children with Zainab (RA), and his subsequent civil and military services to the growing Islamic state, including his strategic dispatch to Yemen. Furthermore, the paper traces his scholarly legacy through the Companions of the Prophet who narrated Ahadith from him. Finally, it chronicles his unwavering dedication up to his participation in the Battle of Yamama and his ultimate death, cementing his legacy as a trustworthy, valiant, and devoted companion of early Islam.
