Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a significant source of nutrition for the human diet and is an economically important food crop worldwide. The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) severely limits its production by direct phloem feeding and indirect virus transmission. Chemical insecticides have given rise to resistance to brown planthopper (BPH), environmental pollution, and a negative impact on non-target organisms and human health due to their excessive use. In efforts to manage these concerns, environmentally acceptable and sustainable substitutes have intensified. The flavonoids play a crucial role in plant growth and protection by fostering tolerance to specific biotic stressors and environmental abiotic challenges. It is crucial to use these adaptable low molecular weight flavonoids for sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture when finding a natural way. These are potential biopesticides due to their extensive biological activity against the BPH. The review highlights the existing evidence on the potential of flavonoids in sustainable management of BPH, with a particular focus on their various modes of action. Furthermore, the relative efficacies of flavonoids and synthetic insecticides are compared in terms of selectivity, environmental safety, and resistance development. Bio-pesticides can be used in integrated pest management (IPM) methods to limit the use of chemical insecticides and eco-friendly, sustainable management of BPH in the rice crop.
