Abstract

This study explores the enduring impact of the colonial legacy on Pakistan’s political system, examining how historical practices from British rule continue to shape the country’s governance, political structures, and societal divisions. Pakistan’s political landscape is deeply influenced by colonial institutions, legal frameworks, and bureaucratic traditions inherited from the British Empire. The research highlights the centralization of power, the legacy of authoritarian rule, and the persistence of ethnic and regional disparities as key elements of this colonial inheritance. The study also discusses how the British colonial approach to governance, which emphasized control through a centralized bureaucracy and military, has contributed to Pakistan’s ongoing political challenges, including weak political parties, military dominance in politics, and difficulties in building a democratic political culture. The findings suggest that while Pakistan has undergone significant changes since independence, the remnants of colonial rule continue to shape the dynamics of its political system, often hindering efforts at democratic consolidation and political stability. The paper concludes with a discussion of how understanding this colonial legacy is crucial for addressing the current political challenges and fostering a more inclusive and democratic political environment in Pakistan.
